GWR Concerned About Radio Ownership Controls

The GWR radio group has commissioned a study which will set out the options for future controls of radio ownership. In July, the Government published a Green Paper called Regulating Communications which GWR welcomed (see Newsline), and the groups commissioned report, Radio Ownership Controls, is due to be published early next week.

The accountancy firm KPMG is to carry out the report. GWR group chief executive Ralph Bernard commented: “The Government’s Green Paper encourages investment in infrastructure and services, but delivery, particularly of specialist services, is both risky and expensive for commercial operators under current controls.”

He continues: “Our aim is to find a model which is widely acceptable to politicians, academics and operators alike so that economies of scale can be realised, leading to a stronger and more efficient UK radio industry that meets Government policy objectives for communications.”
