BSkyB Buys Into Manchester City

BSkyB has bought a 9.9% stake in Manchester City Football Club in a deal which is understood to be worth around £12 million.

The deal, announced today, also includes BSkyB paying £2 million for global rights to become exclusive media partners of the first division team. The satellite broadcaster will have a representative on the board at the club and further money will be raised from a new rights issue to existing shareholders.

A takeover bid by Sky for City rivals Manchester United was blocked earlier this year (see BSkyB’s Man Utd Takeover Is Blocked). Today’s news will double the broadcaster’s football interests, after it gained a stake in Leeds United in August (see BSkyB Takes £13.8m Stake In Leeds United).
