The latest figures from the NRS show that the readership of national newspapers for the period December-May 2002 was up year on year.
The main beneficiaries of the rise in readership were at GMG. The Guardian saw an impressive 33.8% year on year increase in readership. A similar increase was seen at its Sunday sister, the Observer, whose readership increased 29.6%.
Among the tabloids the Daily Star continues to perform well, its readership rising 12.3% . However, elsewhere, news for the red tops was less good. The Sunday Mirror saw a year on year fall in readership as did fellow Sunday tabloid, the market-leading News of the World. The top-selling daily tabloid, the Sun also had its readership shrink over the period, by 4.7%.
