MMC Stops Daily Mail Takeover
The Monopolies and Mergers Commission has objected to the Daily Mail and General Trust’s £92m takeover bid for the T.Bailey Forman newspaper group. (Newsline 3/6/94 – Key 2) The MMC announced that it was opposed to DMGT’s bid for the Nottingham based regional publisher.
The commission said that the bid could give DMGT too high a concentration in the east Midlands area; it already owns the Leicester Mercury and Derby Evening Telegraph through its subsidiary Northcliffe.
The Department of Trade and Industry however has suggested a compromise; it has given DMGT until December 5 to produce acceptable proposals. If DMGT fails to satisfy the MMC the other interested parties, which included Reed and Thomson, are expected to renew their bids.
