Carlton To Bid For Digital Services
According to the Independent Carlton Communications and International CableTel, the cable company, are planning a joint bid to run all three commercial digital TV licences.
The companies are apparently in talks with Flextech, the cable and satellite programme group, to reach a programming deal. A large part of this is believed to centre on the BBC/Flextech alliance which last month announced details of the programmes it would be making available for sale to pay-TV companies *BBC To Set Up 8 New Cable Channels.
Carlton and CableTel are believed to be planning a bid for the remaining three commercial digital TV licences or multiplexes. The other three multiplexes will be given to the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Teletext and Channel 5 and S4C *TV Companies Guarantee Digital Places. The deadline for applications to run the vacant multiplexes is January 31 while the roll-out of terrestrial digital TV is expected to take place in 1998.
