Syfy to launch multi-channel second-screen app

Television channel Syfy has announced that it will be launching a channel-wide second-screen app, becoming the first UK broadcaster to do so.

Broadcast magazine reports that the Syfy Sync application has been designed to support a range of shows, rather than just one single programme – a strategy that has been adopted by the majority of UK broadcasters.

The app will offer users a companion experience for a number of Syfy shows, and has already been downloaded 200,000 in the US since its rollout last August.

Bruce Mitchell, NBCU vice president for digital said to Broadcast: “Developing a new audience within a channel-branded app allows us to add value to viewers’ channel experience and promote access across a wider programming opportunity.

“After piloting Syfy Sync with the UK premiere of Defiance, we will explore opening up the app to other content on the channel, to cross-promote content between audiences.”

Syfy isn’t the only company embracing the increasing uptake of dual screening into modern culture. Vizrt and Zeebox recently announced plans to integrate second-screen interactivity into live TV shows – including audience polling opportunities.

Sony Pictures has also unveiled a companion app for its forthcoming drama Hannibal.
