Dixons Claims Record Breaking Growth For Freeserve
Freeserve, the free internet service provider (ISP) launched by Dixons in September (see Dixons Launches Free Internet Service), is claiming a resounding success having attracted more than 475,000 accounts in the first two months.
Unlike other ISPs, Freeserve does not charge its customers any monthly rental, nor is there an hourly usage charge. The Freeserve software CD is being distributed across Dixons, Currys, PC World and The Link, all of which belong to the Dixons Group.
Dixons says that over 40% of its customers are new to the internet, highlighting the ability of free access to drive the uptake of the internet at home. Freeserve estimates that this represents an increase of more than 10% in the number of people online in the UK.
Mark Dandby, general manager at Freeserve, said: “These figures are great news. By providing a free alternative to subscription services we have taken the UK internet market into a new era.”
