Capital Radio Secures Welsh Digital Licence

Capital Radio has been awarded the digital radio licence for the Cardiff and Newport area. The group was the sole applicant for the licence which was advertised by the Radio Authority in May this year (see RA Continues To Advertise Local Digital Radio Multiplexes).

The Authority has granted the licence on the condition that the group prevents its programming from spilling over to adjoining areas covered by other broadcasters. The licence was advertised to cover an area with an adult population of around 800,000 which roughly corresponds to that covered by existing Independent Local Radio stations in the area.

From October next year it will begin 24-hour-a-day broadcasts of a total of eight programme services including contemporary hits from Red Dragon FM, a dance radio station, Xfm and Capital Gold. The two existing BBC services in the area, BBC Wales and BBC Cymru will also be given space on the digital multiplex.

Shares in Capital Radio have jumped recently, following the posting of strong figures in the latest RAJAR results (see September 1999 RAJAR: London Stations).
