TV Viewing Summary W/E 24/01/99

They seek them here, they seek them there. The BBC seek viewers everywhere. Which is probably why they thought they were onto a winner with the latest adaption of The Scarlet Pimpernel. The first episode pulled in a fairly impressive 8.34 million viewers, although ITV’s London’s Burning was watched by 10.81 million.

Elsewhere the lynchpin of ITV’s period drama output, Catherine Cookson, sees her latest book adaption Tilly Trotter steadily increasing its viewing audience. Over the past three weeks audience figures have hovered around the nine million mark, this week’s total being 9.58 million. This has helped ITV to improve its usually dodgy Friday night line up, where it has occasionally been outperformed by Channel 4 and BBC2.

Carol Vodermen’s quest to have a show on every channel is having mixed results. Her Channel 4 show, Countdown is the top rated programme of the week with 4.41 million viewers. Over on ITV her Changing Rooms clone show, Better Homes, just about makes it into the top thirty list with 9.21 million. Meanwhile, over on BBC1 Carol’s Dream House only manages to attract an audience 5.02 million.
