ONdigital’s PPV Service Unveiled
This week sees the launch of ONrequest, the world’s first digital terrestrial pay-per-view service. A joint venture between ONdigital and SDN, the service went on air on Bank Holiday Monday with the screenings of Shakespeare in Love and The Rugrats Movie.
Deals have been signed with Paramount and Universal to bring top movies to DTT viewers on a pay-per-view basis. Other titles in the initial line-up include Patch Adams, Meet Joe Black and Notting Hill, which will be screened during May.
ONrequest managing director Charles Andrew said: “We are delighted to launch ONrequest with two great studio names. We will provide a first class service with top quality movies available up to 6 months before they are shown on any pay or premium television channel, and in time, will offer sporting and major entertainment events.”
It will compete with BSkyB’s pay-per-view service, Sky Box Office , which launched in 1997.
Separately, Carlton Cinema, the 24-hour movie channel, has signed a licensing deal with Columbia TriStar International Television for a series of contemporary films.
