TV viewing round-up: June 2017

The benefit concert One Love Manchester, held in the aftermath of the bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in May, was by a healthy distance the most popular programme in June.

Featuring a star-studded line-up of musicians such as Liam Gallagher, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Stevie Wonder, Take That and Ariana herself, the three-hour event grabbed 11.6 million viewers.

For some inexplicable reason, ITV decided to mark the 20th anniversary of The Full Monty with the The Real Full Monty.

Featuring familiar faces from some of the commercial broadcaster’s popular shows as well as one of the stars of the original movie (Paul Barber), the one-off show pulled in 5 million viewers.

However, it was the final of Britain’s Got Talent that gave ITV its biggest rating in June, as the talent show contest crowned the latest act to receive the honour of performing in front of the Royal Family.

The lucky winner to join The Royal Variety Performance later in the year was musician Tokio Myers, with the final watched by 9.5 million people.

ITV’s latest police crime drama, The Loch, came with a slightly unique premise. Instead of the usual inner city setting, this time the procedural was set around the area of Loch Ness.

Starring Laura Fraser and Siobhan Finneran as detectives searching for a serial killer (and sadly not the eponymous monster), the six-part drama kicked off with 6.4 million viewers.

Meanwhile, manly man Doctor Who will no longer be a man soon, much to the disappointment of several angry men. One of the last appearances of the manly Doctor, saw the timelord stumble across the infamous Ninth Legion.

Adding a touch of sci-fi fantasy to the legend of the lost Roman legion, the episode titled ‘The Eaters of Light’ attracted a rating of just over 5 million.

The story of a human rights lawyer trying to prove the innocence of a man convicted of killing a school girl was the basis of ITV’s other big drama, Fearless this June.

With Helen McCrory as the lawyer in question and Sam Swainsbury as her client, the debut episode pulled in an average audience of 6.3 million.

Other programmes that did well in June include: Poldark which was seen by 6.7 million viewers; Have I Got Election News For You, attracting an audience of 5.3 million; spin-off series The Voice Kids, with 4.7 million viewers and The Met: Policing London, which had a rating of 4.2 million.
