ASA Upholds Complaint Against Robinsons

The ASA has upheld complaints against a poster ad for Robinsons soft drinks, which depicted young children drinking Robinsons juices under water.

The poster, which appeared in sports and leisure centres throughout the country, carried the slogan “new thinking new drinking”.

A member of the public objected to the advert on the grounds that it was irresponsible, especially as it was placed near the deep end of the local swimming pool. The complainant believed the image contradicted safety guidelines for swimming which advise against drinking for at least one hour prior to swimming.

The advertisers said they had used the poster regularly and, prior to the complaint, had decided not to use it again. They also pointed out that the poster contained a warning stating: “performed by professionals, under adult supervision, please do not copy.”

The ASA noted that children were exposed to the poster in their local sports centres. It also decide the warning was too small and the image irresponsibly portrayed an unsafe activity. In conclusion it asked the advertisers to use a different approach in the future.
