Freeserve Cuts 18 Positions

Freeserve is cutting 18 positions from its editorial and advertising sales team following a five-month review of its portal business.

A spokesperson for Freeserve today confirmed that five positions would be “made redundant” from the advertising sales team, with the remaining 13 coming from the portal and business development departments. However, the internet service provider claims to be creating a “raft” of new jobs and says that those made redundant will be offered new positions within the company.

The spokesperson said: “Conversations are taking place at the moment and are likely to last a few weeks so it’s impossible to tell how many people will be leaving the company. It’s important to note that by the time the restructure is complete the number of people employed by Freeserve’s portal business will actually have grown, not decreased.”

Freeserve denied that the job cuts are a result of the current advertising downturn, which caused Excite to close late last year (see Excite UK Closes With 48 Redundancies) and prompted Yahoo to cut 400 jobs world-wide (see
