Major Will Decide TV Takeovers

The debate over changes in ITV ownership will come to a head in the autumn, at a meeting to be chaired by the Prime Minister. The nine largest ITV companies are banned under the 1990 Broadcasting Act from taking each other over.

Mr Major will also decide on whether to extend the moratorium on other take- overs of ITV companies which runs out on January 1.

Some of the large ITV companies plan to ask the government to bring forward the date when the bids for their franchises can be renewed. The 10 year licences can be reviewed and extended after 6 years.
