GMG Promotes McCall As New Chief Executive

Carolyn McCall Guardian Media Group (GMG) has announced the appointment of Carolyn McCall as its new chief executive, replacing Sir Robert Phillis, who is due to retire at the end of July.

McCall will step up from her position as chief executive of GMG’s national newspaper division, taking the reigns of GMG as a whole on 1 August as well as sitting on the board of the Scott Trust – owner of GMG.

Paul Myners, chairman of GMG, welcomed the appointment, stating: “Carolyn has a brilliant track record in running our national newspapers, and has a very clear and compelling vision for the future growth and strategy of the group.”

Sir Robert Phillis added: “This is a first-class appointment. Carolyn’s drive, energy and understanding will ensure continuing success for GMG in the digital age. She has my total support.”

The promotion will see McCall take responsibility for the publisher’s radio and regional press operations, as well as its national newspapers. Earlier this month the company announced plans to make the Manchester Evening News a free paper within the city’s central district, distribute 50,000 copies free of charge each day (see GMG To Take MEN Free For City Centre Readers).
