Local Press Should Join Cable Companies
Britain’s regional newspapers are uniquely placed to play a major role in the UK cable television market, the Newspaper Society’s Conference was told.
Paul Kearney, managing director of Bristol United Press, said that cable operators “could provide formidable competition, but (in his experience) they are extremely open-minded and eager to form alliances.”
In Bristol, his own Evening Post journalists produce a live news slot daily for Telly West, part of United Artists. The agreement includes cross-promotion of the next day’s paper. “We believe it is a positive and complimentary promotion of our prime role as news providers for our region. It is a useful way for Bristol United Press to experiment in the information and broadcasting market.”
