Fremion Retracts Criticisms

French Green MP, Yves Fremion, who published a committee report in preparation for the EC Green paper on Sponsorship has retracted much of his criticisms of sponsorship.

Fremion’s initial paper called for a complete ban on commercial sponsorship activity. In his revised report, this is retracted; “We want the EC to encourage commercial sponsorship” The revised report has been circulated among members of the European Sponsorship Consultants Association to secure their endorsement.

The EC is due to vote on the report on 26 January, although this may be postponed until after the release of the forthcoming EC Green Paper on Commercial Communications that is scheduled for release in June 1994.

Fremion’s radical turn-about has been attributed to the extreme reaction and lobbying from the industry that the publication of his first report caused.
