2004 Exceeds Predictions For WAP Usage

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) usage over Christmas 2004 enjoyed a 23% increase on the same period in 2003, with a daily average totalling more than 40 million downloads, according to figures released today by the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The overall number of page impressions viewed during 2004 reached a staggering 14.6 billion, creating a new annual record and exceeding the MDA’s previous forecast of 13 billion for the year (see WAP Pages To Reach 13 Billion In 2004), closing in on the 15 billion forecast for the end of 2005.

The MDA recently revealed that market penetration of mobile phone ownership has surpassed 100% with the number of mobile handsets currently in circulation greater than the UK’s population (see UK Mobile Phone Penetration Higher Than Population).

The research group also disclosed data stating that a record number of text messages were sent in 2004, with mobile messaging hitting the 26 billion mark, breaking the previous yearly forecast of 25 billion, according to new data published by the Mobile Data Association (MDA)(see 2004 Breaks Records For Text Messaging).

December saw text messaging reach an all time high, with the total number of texts sent reaching 2.4 billion, delivering the highest monthly total ever recorded. Person-to-person texts sent across the UK last month increased by 26% year on year, with 78 million messages being sent per day. This is the highest average daily figure ever recorded.
