Wireless application protocol (WAP) usage in the UK reached 1.42 billion page impressions during January 2005, enjoying a 18% increase year on year and averaging a daily total of 46 million, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA).
Overall, 2004 saw 14.6 billion page impressions in the UK, creating a new annual record and exceeding the MDA’s previous estimation of 13 billion for the year (see

This massive total was helped by a 23% year on year increase of WAP usage over Christmas 2004, with a daily average of more than 40 million downloads (see 2004 Exceeds Predictions For WAP Usage).
December as a whole saw text messaging reach an all time high, with the total number of texts sent reaching 2.4 billion, delivering the highest monthly total ever recorded. Person-to-person texts sent across the UK last month increased by 26% year on year, with 78 million messages being sent per day. This is the highest average daily figure ever recorded.
