Channel 4 Axes The Word

Channel 4 has announced its proposed budget for next year. It will rise by 15% from £230m to £265m, with expansion for every area of the schedule. The Word will not be included in the new season after the budget.

Youth commissioning editor David Stevenson said “Channel 4 is committed to constant innovation and that should be truer of our youth programming than anywhere else.” Mr Stevenson goes on to say that the Friday night replacements such as Eurotrash and Baadass TV have enjoyed success.

The Word’s notorious reputation for bad taste led to calls from critics to withdraw it from Channel 4’s schedule. Key 2 for Newsfile Story.

Commenting on the increase in programme budget, Director of Programmes, John Willis, said “Channel 4 has had the most successful six months in its 13 year history with the greatest ever concentration of awards matched by increased ratings and advertising revenue, and the profits from several hit films, including Four Weddings and a Funeral and Shallow Grave.”
