BBC Sell Off Attracts Final Bids

The sale of the BBC’s domestic and foreign transmission service reached the final stage yesterday when four UK and US groups handed in their final bids. All offers for this, the BBC’s first privatisation, are believed to exceed £200 million.

The four bidders are International CableTel, a consortium led by Securicor, Mercury Asset Management and Castletower Corp. The leading candidate is thought to be CableTel, which already owns the transmission network for ITV and Channel 4, and if successful in its bid would have a monopoly on terrestrial television.
