Westminster Cable, currently in the process of Video-on-Demand trials, has said it can already be seen that comedy is a very popular choice within the new system, with Blackadder being the most requested item overall. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is the most frequently requested movie.
Stage one of the trial, now into its fourth month, involves residential viewers at up to 100 homes in Westminster. It is testing both the robustness of Digital Equipment Corporation’s Mediaplex videoserver, as well as the ease-of-use of Westminster Cable’s specially developed customer interface.
The second stage, due to begin this summer, will involve a larger sample of 1,000 trialists and will focus on patterns of usage, pricing and marketing preferences. A wider choice of programmes and films will also be included.
The system uses a unique interactive network called Superstar, pioneered by BT who owns the channel, which requires no special equipment other than a remote TV control. No set-top box or installation work is required.
