According to a story in today’s Independent, Carlton Communications is raising £2bn to enable it to intervene and possibly prevent the £3bn merger between United News and Media and MAI.
It is reported that Carlton’s advisers have been told they must have a £1.8bn banking facility in place by next Monday, when a full bid for MAI or a stock market raid for a significant shareholding is widely expected.
It is also not known whether the near £2bn is just to be for MAI, or whether Carlton is planning to raise a share issue which would provide it with more funds to finance other acquisition plans.
