Website Of The Week
http://www.iflybritishmidland.com/
This site is an extremely practical and user-friendly addition to the Internet. British Midland’s site allows users both to find out a variety of information regarding airports and flights and also actually book flights within Europe via the Net.
The site has graphics, though these are used more for practical than aesthetic purposes: maps are used to select flight and airport information and logos to find out about particular services BM offers. Because these graphics are smart but simple, the site is fast to use, though some information obviously takes longer to download.
The most innovative aspect of the site is the facility whereby users can book flights around Europe – this is “Cyberseat”. Maps are used to select departure and destination airports, other requirements such as time, date and number of passengers are entered and then a list of possible flights with prices is displayed. After choosing a flight credit card details are requested and then the flight is booked. There are different versions of this process according to how experienced the user is. Tickets can then be posted, picked up at a travel agents or picked up at the airport.
An important part of Cyberseat is the security arrangements for credit card details: security is achieved by using Netscape’s Commerce Server which supports the Secure Sockets Layer protocol. Netscape’s 1.0 and above support this facility. This essentially means that credit card details are placed in a secure envelope for delivery to BM which cannot be accessed by others. Netscape can be downloaded on site if it is not being used already.
Other useful information available includes details about European airports: about location; BM flight services; taxi details; special hire-car rates and ‘phone numbers. Information about BM services such as the High Flyers Club, Discover Europe Airpass and Diamond Club is also provided.
The site was designed by Novus and launched at the end of last year. More online services are planned
