Telewest and NTL have said that they are in preliminary talks regarding the possibility of merging their UK cable interests. The move would result in a rival to the giant Cable & Wireless Communications which was formed last October between C&W’s Mercury Communications, Nynex, Bell Cablemedia and Videotron.
It is also rumoured that United News & Media would be interested in taking a stake in a Telewest/NTL merger: United is no doubt keen to build its media business by increasing its currently meagre cable interests and its involvement would provide a welcome source of funding for any new company which is to be formed.
