BSkyB has today announced the creation of British Interactive Broadcasting Ltd (BIB) in a bid to push towards an early launch of digital satellite television. The venture owned by BSkyB (32.5%), BT (32.5%), Midland Bank (20%) and Matsuchita (15%) will finance the production of a million set top boxes with full capability to run interactive services. The boxes should retail at around £200, as a results of £265 million available in subsidies from the backers.

BIB will offer the full range of digital services, including home banking, home shopping, travel and holiday services and anticipates being available from summer 1998, following the launch of BSkyB’s digital broadcast service in the spring.
