TV Viewing Summary W/E 19/01/97
The arrival of the X-Files-type drama Dark Skies on Channel Four has helped the station to achieve its highest audience figure of the year so far, with the first episode attracting 5.10 million viewers. Overall however Channel Four audiences fell this week, most significantly Countdown not maintaining its normally relatively stable audience figures throughout the week.
There was no change at the top this week with Coronation Street holding the top two positions, achieving audiences of 17.66 million (Monday), and 17.47 million (Wednesday). Sunday’s episode is beginning to attract a slightly larger audience of 13.60 million compared to 12.76 million in the previous week.
BBC1 still hold the pole position with regards to drama, Casualty this week achieving 13.72 million, however LWT’s Londons Burning continues to gain a higher audience and has this week moved into the top ten. There was more good news for ITV on the drama front with both Taggart and The Wingless Bird making significant audience increases.
