EU: EP on safe use of internet

A report on a Community action plan to promote the safe use of the internet has been adopted by the Committee on Civil Liberties and Internal Affairs in the European Parliament. The Committee’s report asks for rules to be established at an EU level to ensure that the internet is used safely. Following the Council’s rejection of a number of EP amendments during the first reading, MEPs have demanded that support be given to organisations to counteract the abuse of women and children over the web; that an effective means be used to disseminate information to raise awareness of users’ rights; and for internet providers to keep to an industry code of conduct on undesirable website content (pornography, glorification of violence, racism, etc.). The report is expected to be debated by the EP during its November Strasbourg Session.
