Channel 5 Continues Its Soccer Success

Continuing to draw on the success of its football coverage, Channel 5 has won the exclusive rights to broadcast Liverpool and Chelsea’s European football campaigns.

The channel covered all of Chelsea’s games in their run-up to victory in this year’s Cup Winners’ Cup. In fact, the club’s game against Real Betis gave Channel 5 its largest audience to date – an average of 3.2 million, according to C5’s own figures.

This is to be continued with coverage of Chelsea’s defence of the title in the coming season. The channel will also broadcast live Liverpool’s UEFA Cup matches at home in Anfield.

Controller of sport at Channel 5, Robert Charles, says: “This is another indication of our committment to top class football and, allied to our coverage of the Euro 2000 qualifying matches, which also begins in September, provides a real feast of football for C5 viewers next season.”

Liverpool’s UEFA campaign begins on 15 September; Chelsea start their defence on the 17th.
