Telewest Rumoured To Make General Cable Takeover Bid

Telewest Communications is reported to be about to make a counter takeover bid for French-controlled cable group General Cable.

Earlier this week NTL was reported to have made a bid for General Cable in the region of £550 million (subscribers see NTL In General Cable Takeover Rumours). Telewest has also been in discussion with the company for some time although it was believed that its bid had been turned down.

Telewest announced yesterday that it is to buy the London and Birmingham cable franchises from Comcast UK following Comcast’s takeover by NTL (subscribers see Telewest To Buy Birmingham And London Cable Franchises). If it were to succeed in a takeover of General Cable as well, Telewest would become the UK’s largest cable company serving over six million homes.

A spokesperson for Telewest would neither confirm nor deny the takeover bid when contacted by Newsline.
