OFT Seeks Industry Response To ITV Sales Practice
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has said that it is writing to a number of trade bodies to discover whether ITV’s new sales policy (subscribers see ISBA Consults IPA On ITV Sales Policy) is perceived to be anti-competitive.
The ITV sales houses agreed in October last year to trade airtime sales on the basis of share of TV broadcast rather than share of ITV spend. Whilst this has been received favourably by the Network, other groups, including Billett’s, have been more critical of the move claiming it is an abuse of a privileged position (subscribers see ITV Sales Policy: There May Be Trouble Ahead).
The OFT is keen to garner responses to how the new policy is operating, and wishes to determine whether there is an abuse of ITV’s market position. However, other than the request for information, the OFT is not currently planning to take any action against the Network.
