Third And Last London Digital Multiplex Goes Up For Grabs

Third And Last London Digital Multiplex Goes Up For Grabs

The Radio Authority is advertising the last of the three Greater London digital multiplex licences. Applications are invited for the licence, which covers Greater London and the surrounding areas, a population of up to approximately 8.5 million adults aged 15+.

Because of frequency re-use constraints the coverage of this licence will be slightly less extensive than the two licences already awarded. These were won by the CE Digital (see Capital And EMAP Win First London Digital Licence) and Switch Digital (see Switch Digital Wins Second London Licence) consortia.

There is no guaranteed place on the digital multiplex for either existing independent local radio stations or BBC services, as the BBC’s London Live is already on the second London multiplex. The closing date for applications is 13 March 2001, and the Radio Authority expects to award the licence, initially for a twelve year period, early next summer.
