Net Advertising Revenues Double
Revenues for internet advertising more than doubled in the first half of 1999, according to a report published by the Internet Advertising Bureau. During this period web advertising in the UK grew by 122% from £7.9 million to £17.3 million, compared to the same period in 1998.
The study, compiled for the industry association by PricewaterhouseCoopers, showed that banner ads are driving much of the revenue. Accounting for 80% of half-year revenues, they continue to dominate display advertising.
However, it reported that online advertising had yet to enter the mainstream with most of the revenue for the medium going to a few big operators, leaving the smaller start-up sites behind.
