Cinema Enjoys Successful September
Cinema saw another successful month in terms of admissions during September, with a 13.5% rise year on year bringing the total to 10.6 million, and putting the industry on course to reach the Cinema Advertising Association’s (CAA) predicted year end total of 148 million, having reached an admissions total of 113 million during the year to date.
Christine Costello, vice president of the CAA, indicated that this is a sector yet to be hard hit by the media downturn, saying: “Strength and range of film product is reflected in the growth of advertising revenue, with cinema spend surpassing last year’s 12 month total in just 9 months.”
In terms of box office takings, Baz Luhrman’s musical Moulin Rouge dominated last month, taking £10.6m. Big summer release Planet of the Apes managed to stay in the top five, taking £4m and now stands at number 8 in the top ten box office hits of the year, having taken a total of £16.9m at the box office so far.
The industry is still anticipating a major boost from the launch of magical adventure films Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings before the end of the year. Both films are likely to benefit from their basis in popular children’s books, with the former especially being the subject of both popular obsession among children and adults alike and of extensive marketing including FMCG pack promotions.
