Millions Tune Into Telethon
Around 89m people in the US are thought to have tuned in to the America: A Tribute To Heroes celebrity fundraiser on Friday. The show was shown across over 30 networks, and estimates by Neilsen Media Research put the total number who watched the entire two hour show at 60m.
The event was paid for and simultaneously broadcast live by ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox, but was offered free of charge to other broadcasters. In this country, ITV1 joined the live simultaneous broadcast in the small hours of Saturday morning, while BBC1 repeated it last night.
The event saw film, TV and music stars including Tom Hanks, Sylvester Stallone, Julia Roberts, Stevie Wonder and Tom Cruise making appeals and answering telephones in the effort to raise money for the families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
