Times Newspapers Appoints New Commercial Head

Times Newspapers has appointed former News Group ad director, Mike Gordon, to the newly created position of commercial director.

Gordon will be responsible for overseeing the group’s entire advertising department, as well as News International Enterprises and Times Digital. He will report to the company’s general manager Paul Hayes.

The new position, which involves working closely with group advertising director John Tricket, has been created to offer marketers more integrated packages across a number of Times Newspapers properties.

Gordon has occupied a number of advertising and sales roles within News International, at both Times Newspapers and News Group Newspapers, which includes The Sun and News Of The World. In 1998 he was promoted to head of business development for News Group and in 1999 was made deputy advertisement director. He then left in April 2002 to join Virtual Internet, where he later became a managing director.

News International recently relaunched the Saturday edition of The Times with new sections, increased coverage and new writers in an attempt to increase the circulation of the title. The Sunday Times was also overhauled with the launch of a new CD-ROM called The Month (see Times Relaunches Saturday Edition With Extra Content).

Earlier this year News Group Newspapers appointed former Barclays marketer Belinda Furneaux-Harris as its new marketing director. The company had been without a senior marketer since Nick Canning left last year. He was temporarily replaced by promotions director, Andy Agar, who resigned in March to set up his own promotions agency (see News Group Appoints New Marketing Director).
