Trinity Broadens Horizons With Betting Service

Trinity Mirror is to extend its Racing UK and Racing Post properties with an online betting service, offering punters the chance for a flutter within a familiar and trusted branded environment.

The new service will be launched later this year in partnership with bookmakers Bet365, Blue Square, Ladbrokes, The Tote and VCbet, the fixed odds betting arm of Victor Chandler Group.

Commenting on the new initiative, Jeremy Reed, managing director of Trinity Mirror’s sports division, said: “Our aim is to build on and complement our leading positions in print and online racing media by creating a key destination for punters on the net.”

The company clearly hopes for sizeable revenues from the new venture, pointing out in a statement to the City this morning that “online betting turnover on horse racing in the UK tops 3500 million per annum and is rising fast.”

The increase in popularity of online services such as gambling is due mainly to the rapid uptake of broadband, with the number of high-speed internet users in Britain currently thought to be over seven million.
