Telewest Boosts Digital Channel Portfolio

Cable provider Telewest Broadband has secured a raft of new channels, announcing the acquisition of broadcast licences with Channel 4, Eurosport, TV Travel Shop, The Community Channel and Teachers TV.

The cable company has confirmed it will carry Channel 4’s new venture, More 4, when it becomes available as well as Teachers TV, a new channel from the Department for Education and Skills, which launches in February.

Telewest has also negotiated renewed terms with Channel 4 for the continued carriage of E4 and FilmFour, in addition to new agreements with Eurosport for British Eurosport and new channel Eurosport 2, formerly Eurosport News, which launches today.

New terms have also been agreed for TV Travel Shop and The Community Channel, meaning they will continue to be available to all of Telewest’s one million digital TV customers.

Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer of Telewest Broadband, said: “These new agreements build on the successful December launches of ABC1 and E4+1. We’ve secured some popular existing channels and we’ll be introducing some exciting newcomers too.”

He added: “We’re pleased to start the new year as we mean to go on – by continuing to offer an excellent choice of viewing at the best possible price.”

Telewest revently boosted its high street presence with a deal to bring its low cost cable products to the shelves of electronics retailer, Dixons (see Telewest Pressures Digital Rivals With Dixons Deal).
