Radio Authority Acknowledges Talk Radio’s Efforts

The Radio Authority’s latest Complaints Bulletin, for the third quarter 1995, reveals that the Authority upheld complaints on 23 topics against Talk Radio. However, most of these occurred in July and August; as the Authority has already fined the station £5,000 for a programme broadcast in August it has noted “the evidence of firmer editorial control.”

With the shock-jock tactics which were the station’s main style at its launch now removed, the Authority notes, “There has been a marked and welcome reduction in the level of upheld complaints since the steps taken by the company… in view of the efforts being made by Talk Radio UK, no additional sanctions have been imposed as a consequence of the complaints”.

Of a total of 152 complaints sent to the Authority over the quarter, 40 were upheld; the majority of these (29) were related to the taste/decency/ offence category; only 6 of these were not related to Talk Radio.
