Channel 4 Warned By ITC Over The Word

The ITC has today officially warned Channel 4 over two editions of The Word, stating that stricter controls have to be exercised on the content of items in similar programmes in the future. This is the second occasion that the ITC has had to issue a formal warning to Channel 4; the first time was over the fatal stabbing in Brookside.

Incidents in The Word caused “serious concern” and some breached Channel 4’s licence. Incidents highlighted by the ITC as being unacceptable on grounds of taste and decency included Santa Claus vomiting on a victim, and a colostomy bag being emptied over another person’s head. Also mentioned was Mr Powertool, in which a man pulled a girl on a chair across the studio using a rope attached to his penis. ITC: 0171 255 3000
