Independent Gets New Look Section Two
Today sees the launch of the Independent‘s new, revamped second section. The paper states that the aim of The Tabloid, as it is now called, is “to offer intellectual, emotional and visual pleasure; to follow the movement of cultural and social life in the way Independent readers would wish”.
The first issue however offers basically the same content as it always has, covering arts, fashion and listings while the established industry pages such as media, law and education will remain on the same days.
The biggest change is in the look of the section, with the overall design being much less cluttered and appearing more upmarket. Duncan Wilson, a MediaTel designer, commented: “it’s definitely the best look that the Independent has found so far, and the closest it has come to the stripped-down, minimalist, modernist look that it has spent the last couple of years looking for”, though the front-cover, with writing printed side-ways, was not found to be so impressive. Today’s Tabloid has four less pages than it did last week.
…The News of the World has also redesigned its Sunday magazine. As well as a new masthead there is also the addition of a 15-page listings guide, though the overall content remains essentially the same. Pagination has increased from 56 to 64 pages.
