Irish Titles Scoop Newspaper Awards
The Belfast News Letter, the Irish News and the Sunday Life were among the titles which won awards for their sales success at a recent awards ceremony organised by the Newspaper Society.
The Belfast News Letter was the winner of the Northcliffe Trophy, the top award for newspapers achieving consistent year-on-year growth over the past three years. The title recorded increases of 1.36%, 0.75% and 1.15% in the three years from 1992. The Irish News won the award for the best morning paper with a 1.4% rise, while the Sunday Life took the prize for fastest-growing Sunday for the second year running.
The trophy for the best overall performance by an evening title was awarded to the Ipswich Evening Star for its increase of 1.28% and the Sutton Herald won the award for the best overall weekly newspaper with a dramatic 48.72% boost to its circulation.
There were also category winners for both evening and weekly newspapers. The Cambridge Evening News (0.2%) won the ECN award for evenings with circulations between 40,000 and 80,000, and the Welwyn & Hatfield Times (1.27%) was awarded a prize for weeklies with circulations between 15,000 and 25,000.
