Channel 4 To Pay ITV Statutory £90m

Channel 4 To Pay ITV Statutory £90m

The ITC has announced that Channel 4 is to pay £89.9 million to the ITC for distribution to ITV licensees under the statutory arrangements of the Broadcasting Act 1990. The Act states that where Channel 4’s revenue exceeds 14% of the total television qualifying revenues of ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and S4C, 50% of the surplus must be paid to the ITC for redistribution to ITV licensees in proportions determined by the ITC.

Total terrestrial revenue for 1997 was £2,386.1 million, making Channel 4’s minimum income £334.1 million. Channel 4 earned qualifying revenue of £513.4 million and is therefore due to pay ITV the £89.9 million. For 1996 this figure was £87.5 million.

The largest portions of this surplus are to be allocated to Carlton and Central, receiving £13.2 million and £13.3 million respectively.

The figures may be subject to adjustment following the ITC’s audit of the licensee’s revenue figures.
