EU: Bad news on infringement cases

At the infringement meeting of the EC, held on 18 June, the case concerning Polygram was accepted and was to be discussed at the meeting of chefs de cabinet on Monday 22 June. However there was insufficient support for pursuing both the Loi Evin and Greek toys’ cases. There was strong opposition from Santer, Papoutsis, Flynn and Cresson to proposed legal action against France over the Loi Evin. Karel van Miert also expressed uncharacteristic reservations on taking legal action. However, at that meeting there was still a small majority of Commissioners in favour of taking legal action. But the outlook for taking legal action on the Greek toys issue is now very poor. The probability now is that Monti will seek a delay in the case, pending the result of a large survey on the issue, which itself will no doubt delay matters further.
