The EC has announced that it will investigate the planned merger of CLT-UFA and Kirch of the German pay-TV provider Premiere and of the companies BetaDigital and BetaResearch. The aim of the intended merger is to develop Premiere into a joint digital pay-TV channel and marketing platform incorporating Kirch’s current digital television activities, with the technical services required for the provision and broadcasting of digital Pay-TV programmes to be supplied by BetaDigital. The EC is concerned that the merger means Premiere could have a dominant position in the sector and would be in a position to determine the conditions under which other broadcasters could compete with Premiere on the German market.
