Government To Consult On Digital

Government To Consult On Digital

The Government is to consult the public and the broadcasting industry on the way in which digital TV and its benefits can best be introduced across the UK and how the switch from analogue to digital services can take place.

An independent report has been published by NERA/Smith which analyses the options for digital take-up and the Government is seeking views on the report’s conclusions.

A key part of the report suggests that the present analogue TV system could be closed down within 10-15 years’ time and that there would be significant benefits to the economy if the Government announces within two years of the launch of digital terrestrial TV a firm indication of the date and process they intend to follow in encouraging the switch.

The Government’s consultation document seeks views by 5 September 1998 on the conclusions reached in NERA’s report.
