Is Amazon going to buy Texas Instruments’ mobile chip business?

Industry reports moot that Amazon is in negotiations to buy Texas Instruments’ mobile chip business.

If the deal is completed it will enable Amazon to compete against the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung with the ability to design and manufacture its own chips.

Amazon is relatively new in the mobile space having released just a couple of tablet devices in the form of its Kindle range. However, the online retail giant, is making moves to solidify its position in the space via the acquisition of Texas Instruments’ mobile business, according to a report published by Israeli newspaper Calcalist.

Calcalist speculates that the rumoured Apple iPad mini could be the catalyst for Amazon to acquire Texas Instruments. Amazon’s strategy to compete with the iPad has been to launch cheaper, less high end tablets sold at cost price but if Apple launches a cheaper iPad that will erode the appeal of Amazon’s Kindle devices.
