Guy Phillipson named new JICWEBS chair

The Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards (JICWEBS) has appointed former IAB chief executive Guy Phillipson as its chair – replacing Richard Foan, who stepped down at the end of 2018.

As a previous JICWEBS board member, Phillipson was “instrumental” in setting the committee’s focus on brand safety, ad verification and anti-fraud programmes. He also has experience both buy-side and sell-side, having held the head of advertising position at Vodafone and been chair of digital media agency iCrossing.

“As internet advertising continues to boom worldwide, I’m a big believer in robust and transparent standards for efficient and safe ad trading,” Phillipson said.

“So, I’m delighted to be invited to become the chairman of JICWEBS following Richard Foan’s years of sterling work building such a credible and essential organisation.”

Jules Kendrick, who was appointed CEO in November last year, added: “Guy is extremely well respected in the digital advertising industry and has played an active part in the JICWEBS journey to this point. I’m very much looking forward to working with him to help shape the future of our dynamic and fascinating industry.”

Two years ago, at the request of industry bodies including ISBA, IPA, IAB and AOP, Foan formed the stand alone not-for-profit company, JICWEBS Ltd. Over 120 companies now subscribe to the industry agreed Standards for trusted digital ad trading.

“We now have the opportunity to build on JICWEBS’ success to date by extending and reinforcing the self-regulatory regime for our industry,” said Phil Smith, director general of ISBA.

“Guy is a great addition to the team and will complement Jules Kendrick’s skills and experience, with the full support of the Executive Board.”

Elsewhere, Jon Mew, CEO of IAB UK, added: “Industry self-regulation works best when accomplished and motivated people make it happen. Guy is the perfect addition to the team.”
