TikTok has overtaken Google as the most visited website on the internet for the first time.
According to cloud services company Cloudflare’s data, TikTok.com jumped from seventh place in 2020 to first place in 2021 overtaking Amazon.com, Netflix.com, Apple.com, Microsoft.com, Facebook.com and Google.com.
TikTok first “dethroned” Google on 17 February 2021 and it was after 10 August 2021 that TikTok was in the lead on most days.
Cloudflare’s report highlights that particularly popular days for TikTok in terms of internet traffic were in October and November, including Thanksgiving on 25 November and Black Friday on 26 November.
TikTok.com also came first in Cloudflare’s top ten social media internet domains, taking the top spot from Facebook.com.
This comes as TikTok, owned by Bytedance, became the first non-Facebook mobile app to surpass three billion downloads globally this year, following WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook and Instagram.
Some domain names like Google.com aggregate different websites under them such as Maps, Translate, Photos, Flights, Books, and News.
