Radio Groups Report Mixed Performance At End Of Year

Commercial radio groups, GWR, Capital and Scottish Radio Holdings have issued trading updates within the last week, with all but SRH painting a depressing picture of radio advertising at the end of 2004.

GWR stated that it had been affected by weak trading throughout October and November, but boosted by some growth during December, while Capital also reported a dip in revenues in the fourth quarter, predicting that January will be flat year on year.

GWR saw total revenue growth of 5% last month, strengthened by a 8% increase in national revenues. This strong performance came primarily from Classic FM, which enjoyed an increase in 10% on national revenues, year on year.

The company added that forward visibility remains short term, but that impressive Christmas sales of digital radios were “most encouraging”.

Meanwhile, SRH issued a positive trading statement to shareholders, announcing an 11% growth in revenues period on period, and a 5% increase in year on year totals.
